Two Portsmouth Public Schools art teachers were recognized by the Virginia Art Education Association (VAEA).

Angel Jones, a Churchland Academy art teacher with six years of service in Portsmouth Public Schools, received the 2026 VAEA Tidewater Region Elementary Art Educator Award.

"One of my greatest joys as a teacher is helping students see art all around them - in the clothes they wear, backpacks they carry and technology they use," said Jones.

Jessica Kovalcik, a Churchland High art teacher with five years at Portsmouth Public Schools, received the 2026 VAEA State National Art Honor Society Sponsor of the Year Award.

"I inspire and support my students while teaching techniques, art history, art criticism, creative problem solving and thinking through diverse art experiences," said Kovalcik.
